BEING WEAK FOR THE WEAK

Today, I read 1Corinthians. I make sure I do my Bible Study every evening even though I have missed so many evenings - God have mercy. Today's Bible study was just awesome and Apostle Paul was talking about the issue of eating meat sacrificed to idols. One thing I love about Apostle Paul is that he is just a great teacher and every of his words are so much filled and invested with power from the Holy Spirit.

He firstly registered that there is no other greater power than God. God is the absolute and superior and ONLY great power and so, we have to first register that fact in our heads. Having the knowledge, that our father is the one and only true power in the entire world is a wonderful revelation! If you haven't read my article on KINGING, you just have to check the archives and click on it so you can have a more in-depth understanding on who you are.

So now, as Christians, all the idols and orisa and all those rubbish stuffs are nothing to us. They are absolutely nothing to us and just as I said in the KINGING article, we are kings unto Christ and therefore we have no fear. We are scared of nobody and nothing because we know that all the idols and gods of these world are absolutely illusion and apparitions set up by the devil to fool and scare the ignorant. So, if you don't know the word of God, you will be scared of idols and witches and wizards.

Knowing that these things are nothing to us, we therefore have the knowledge that eating food offered to gods cannot harm us. I remember in 200 level when one of my lecturers Pastor Tolu Mala told us in one of his classes that if he sees food that are for the sole purpose of offering to the gods of the ignorant, he would eat it. In this part of the world, we see that a lot. It could be on the road or in their shrines or temples. When he said that, I began to wonder. Why will you just intentionally step on burning coals?

However, reading my Bible has made me understand that there is no harm whatsoever in doing so because we have a greater power in us who made food for the sustenance of life. To the people that are sacrificing it to their idols, it means something but to us, it means nothing and we see it as food created by God. That's a beautiful revelation!

However, he established a point I call 'being weak for the weak'. He said that there are still so many baby Christians who are still weak in the faith and do not have this knowledge because they are still being fed with milk. He now asked a question in 1Corinthians 8 vs. 10 and 11

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11 So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.

So, this balls down to the fact that there are some things that are not wrong but we just have to desist from doing it because of the faith of other Christians because if we hurt them, we are sinning against Christ. As a Christian, you must not put on the armour of 'I-don't-care'. That is not the system of God but the system of the world! You just have to care. You to be 'weak' for the weak. Your own type of weakness is not to go down the drain in your faith but just like apostle Paul and what I wrote in my KINGING article, you just have to 'servant' and be humble and edify yourselves with charity and help the faith of others.

This chapter connects to other parts of our lives and the Christian living. There are some doctrines that are not stated in the Bible like specifically and this includes using of earrings, trousers, attachments, make - up etc. but what is emphasized is absolute decency and modesty. So, if you are one person that believes in using earring and wearing trouser and you are going to preach to someone who doesn't, you have to for that moment put them off! You have to sacrifice that moment for a lost soul! Some people don't entertain people that use those stuffs. If you are going to preach to people like that, remove your earrings and put on a skirt or gown. Its called being weak for the weak so you don't affect their belief in what you are about to say.

And as touching doctrines, too many churches have different doctrines. We don't need to argue about doctrines. Argument is just a plan by the devil because in the course of doing that, we sin by getting vexed and we also weaken some people's faith. Instead, when it comes to being weak for the weak, you have to sacrifice some things because of the faith of some people. Its pertinent.

1 Corinthians 8New International Version (NIV)

Concerning Food Sacrificed to Idols

Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.[a]
So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
12 When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
