‘Glory to God’, Pastor Matthew shouted

‘Hallelujah!’ we all said in excitement

‘God has been so good to us right from the days of our fathers – father Abraham – down to us and He has blessed us with every blessing. That’s why we have to rejoice for God has said we will never be sick. We will never lack. We shall lend and never borrow. We shall be the head and not the tail...’
‘AMEN!’ the entire congregation kept saying.

Service was over and we all went home. I was personally excited because Pastor Matthew had pronounced blessings upon us. As I opened the door of the house, I was welcomed with the sad face of grandma. I knew what that meant. Isaac was still very sick and we didn’t have enough money to fund his bills. The one we borrowed from our neighbour was finished and it seemed like all hope was lot. It was hard holding on to the blessings Pastor Matthew had pronounced.
Many times in life, we are faced with so many questions and situations that often leave us asking questions. We are fully aware that God has promised to bless us but still, we do not see the manifestation of such blessings. The book of Deuteronomy 28 to the end explains why.

Many people see the church as a hospital. They run there whenever they are down and depressed or frustrated knowing fully well that the Pastor would always preach uplifting messages- Messages of Joy and Peace. We all grew up listening to such messages. However, I have come to realize that there is actually something the Church forgot to tell us.

The Church forgot to tell us that there is a condition attached to each and every blessing stated in the Bible. Even our salvation had a condition – Jesus death which cleansed us absolutely giving us our freedom and salvation. If there were no conditions attached to these blessings, too many people will be blessed unworthily.

Deuteronomy 28 started with the blessings God promised the children of Israel

Deuteronomy 28 vs. 1

‘If you fully obey all these commandments of the Lord your God, the laws I am declaring to you today, God will transform you into the greatest nation in the world’ (The Living Bible Version)
Deuteronomy 28 vs. 9

‘He will change you into a holy people dedicated to Himself; this He has promised to do if you will only obey Him and walk in His ways’ (The Living Bible Translation)
Deuteronomy 28 vs. 14

‘But each of these blessings depends on your not turning aside in any way from the laws I have given you; and you must never worship other gods’ (The Living Bible Translation)

And it goes on and on. Even the curses were conditional. So are you still falling sick and you are holding onto the verse of the Bible that says He will not allow the diseases of the Egyptians to come upon you? Well, Deuteronomy 28 vs. 27 says

‘He will send upon you Egyptian boils, tumours, scurvy, and itch, for none of which will there be a remedy’ (The Living Bible Translation)

This will only happen if you don’t obey His commandments. Every day, you go to church or maybe you keep hearing sermons of hope and reading the part of the Bible that lifts you up or you have a promise of God upon your life and it’s yet to manifest, God works by His principles. If you obey Him, everything will come easily. Otherwise, the otherwise will happen.

Now, some people might read this important message and say,

‘Oh, you are being too raw or harsh. Deuteronomy 28 is in the Old Testament. We are no longer under the law but under grace.’

Yes, of course! You are very right! Jesus has died for us in order that we might be saved. We aren’t saved automatically except we accept to be saved. So if you aren’t saved, you are automatically under the curse. If you are saved, you have to live by God’s principles still. If not, His blessings cannot come to manifest in your life. It’s almost like you are still working and walking under the curse. So, Deuteronomy 28 still very much applies. The only difference is that we are not bound by the law but by Grace. Let no man deceive you.

Next time, when Pastor starts raining blessings from a particular scripture and he forgets to tell you the condition attached, please go back to check with faith so that you can know what to do to enter into the blessings and promises of God.

For example, Pastor says you shall live long. The Bible says you shall honour your father and mother so that your days may be long in the land of the living. So if you shout a big AMEN but you are very much dishonouring your parents, who is deceiving who?

May the Lord bring to light His truth – undiluted truth – in Jesus Name. AMEN!
